Case Study - Highwood House, Oxfordshire
Sympathetic extension and remodelling of distinctive Cotswold family house. Remodelling and extending this private family home required a sympathetic approach to preserve the building's distinctive Cotswold character and minimise disruption to the owners. Despite delays due to bad weather, Beard completed the project in 20 weeks, building both a new single storey extension and completely refurbishing the existing property. Internally everything has been renewed including a complete electric and plumbing refit, a new kitchen, new bathrooms, floor coverings, heating system and full redecoration. New parts of the house are of traditional cavity wall construction with a natural stone outer skin to blend with the original. The whole property was roofed in Cotswold slate, with a lead roof to the single storey extension at the back of the house. High quality natural materials and traditional construction skills were used throughout. Challenges & Solutions With the majority of work taking place at the rear of the property, overcoming difficult access was the biggest issue. All materials had to be taken through the existing building, so careful scheduling of construction activities with the owner helped smooth the process.
