MCHASE logoaximising space and facilities for Children's Hospice

Beard’s Guildford team recently completed a £300,000 project to extend and refurbish facilities at Christopher’s Children’s Hospice near Guildford. The initial phase of work involved the construction of a traditional two-storey maintenance building, with storage rooms and toilets on the ground floor and open plan accommodation above for staff meetings and training. A moveable acoustic screen to divide the space plus a secondary external staircase adds further flexibility.

Within the main building, the space created by relocating maintenance services was adapted to form a new administration area. This in turn freed up a first floor office area, which the team converted into a self-contained flat for families on extended stays.

“By clever manipulation of space, we now have more room for visiting families and for more children’s activities.  Beard’s team were very considerate and worked closely with us to ensure minimal disruption to the children and families in our care – we’re really happy with the new space.” Bridget Turner, Director of Care, Shooting Star CHASE

The busy Hospice remained occupied and in full use throughout all stages of the work, requiring a very sensitive and considerate approach from all members of the team. Close coordination with Hospice staff helped to ensure minimal disturbance to children and families in their care.
