First carbon neutral school building in Oxfordshire A team from Beard Oxford has completed a 12 month project at the Cooper School in Bicester to create extensive new teaching facilities, including a new science block extension incorporating three laboratories and a standalone two-storey sixth form centre, the first zero carbon school building in Oxfordshire. Sustainability has been a hallmark of the project and the new Sixth Form centre, a showcase for Oxfordshire County Council, uses eco-building technologies in its construction to lower emissions and reduce energy bills. These include improved insulation, high performance GRP windows, air source heat pumps for hot water and heating and a 273m² array of photovoltaic panels to provide electricity. The structure itself uses a lightweight steel frame and eco friendly materials, all of which can be recycled. Beard construction director, John Youle said: “Helping the school to meet coveted ECO School status was an important factor and the collaboration achieved by the team with all parties, especially the project consultants Atkins, helped to ensure a very positive outcome. Construction was completed on time and in budget.” Ben Baxter, Headteacher for the Cooper School added: “Students and staff are delighted with our new facilities. The new Sixth Form Centre in particular, extends our ability to support students in the local community. Throughout the year long project Beard has been an exemplary construction partner. The team understand the needs of a busy school environment and a collaborative approach has enabled us to function normally without disruption.” |
