Innovation is at the heart of Beard’s continuous improvement and the driving force behind our consistent project delivery and customer satisfaction.  Our employees constantly seek innovative systems and products to speed up build times, reduce costs and increase consistency for our customers.  This means Beard can stay competitive and deliver best value to our customers every time.

Efficiency

Beard has introduced a number of new management systems to the business to drive innovation and improve our operational efficiency.  These include the ‘Beard Alliance’ to integrate our supply chain, performance management to manage employees, the Balanced Scorecard system to benchmark all aspects of the business and significant investment in new IT.

By eliminating management overlap and maximising internal resources, our senior managers can clearly focus on delivering better value to our customers.

Construction delivery

As an advocate of lean construction, we have seen much innovation in our construction management techniques, which often complement our commitment to the environment.  An integrated supply chain has been achieved by partnering with our preferred suppliers, subcontractors and design consultants.  Off-site construction continues to be a big focus for Beard, resulting in strategic partnerships with specialist manufacturers to benefit from external expertise.  A recent £7m student accommodation project benefited from significant programme and cost savings through the installation of sixty pre-fabricated bathroom pods.

Product selection

Wherever possible, we use our expert product knowledge to benefit our customers.  In recent years we have been quick to adopt many energy efficient and environmentally friendly products such as ground source heat pumps, photo voltaics, automatic passive ventilation and rainwater harvesting systems.

A new £3.1 million primary school was recently built for Wiltshire County Council only because Beard was able to value engineer significant savings from the use of alternative building products.  This was achieved without compromising the original specification for the building’s use.

Ongoing learning

Key to our success in implementing innovation is sharing knowledge.  Employees are encouraged to share their experiences of new products and building methods at a number of forums held to communicate best practice company-wide.  Innovation and efficiency are featured in the bi-monthly board report with a particular focus on delivering best value for our customers, construction delivery, product performance and research into new products.
