Young adults with learning difficulties get new care home

Young adults with learning difficulties in Swindon are benefiting from a new care home, which has been built by Beard.

The new single storey home, which is being managed by the White Horse Care Trust, is an extension to a 1970’s bungalow and provides 6 bedrooms, two assisted bathrooms, an en-suite shower room, kitchen, living room, dining area and laundry.  The bathrooms have been specially designed for disabled children with hydraulic baths which fill and empty automatically.  Hoists have been provided in the bedrooms and bathrooms to help with mobility. Outside children have access to a garden and courtyard.

The project was designed by CMS Bath Ltd, a multi-displinary practice based in Corsham, Wiltshire.  Project architect John Menage designed a domestic environment to create warmth and security.

Access to the building during construction was one of the construction team’s biggest challenges.  Ian Spalding, Chief Executive of the White Horse Care Trust said:

"Beard was  employed as the main contractor in the extensive enlargement and modernisation of one of our existing residential care homes in Swindon.  The site had significant access issues and we were concerned at the impact that the building works would have upon relations with our neighbours.  In the event, Beard managed the project in an exemplary manner.  We were delighted with the quality of their work and by the very positive and effective communication which existed between the key players involved.  Indeed, the willingness of the Beard management team to go that little bit further to ensure that issues were quickly resolved played an important part in the success of the project."
