Using traditional craft skills and a modern management approach, we carefully restore historic buildings to preserve England’s built heritage

Beard has a special understanding of the care needed when restoring and converting historic structures.

We have breathed new life into many listed buildings. Beard teams have renovated fragile timber barns, renewed centuries-old masonry and built modern interiors alongside fragile Roman mosaics.

Our extensive experience of running restoration sites has enabled us to become specialists in this field. We employ our own workforce of highly skilled tradespeople, and our site managers have hands-on experience of traditional construction crafts and techniques.

Each restoration project presents a unique set of challenges, so Beard works with trusted consultants and subcontractors who provide expert advice and practical support whenever needed.

Working with the design team, we consider the history of the building and all previous construction work on the site. We then jointly plan measures that will minimise the impact of any structural defects.

We carry out sensitive alterations and repairs, re-using as much of the building’s original fabric as possible.

“We are delighted that Beard has won the contract to refurbish ‘Staircase 16’. This is the third project that Beard has undertaken for Pembroke College and we have always been impressed by the way in which they have managed the work, often in difficult circumstances.”

John Church, Bursar, Pembroke College, Oxford.
