Safety is our top priority

Beard has an excellent safety record and keeps fully up to date with any changes in health and safety legislation. The company is accredited to the OHSAS Occupational Health and Safety standard.

We are wholeheartedly committed to ensuring the health and safety of staff, customers, subcontractors, suppliers and the general public. We drive our responsibility in this area from board level. Our health and safety policy is implemented and managed on site by our project and site managers.

Safety management on site

Beard implements best practice safety management.

Every project identifies and minimises potential risks by undertaking a detailed risk assessment, developing a safety management plan and implementing safe, best practice working methods and procedures. Every Beard site is audited by the industry’s largest independent assessor, the Building Safety Group.

We have developed a simple and effective safety management process for repair and maintenance sites. Our innovative process is recognised in a case study published by the Constructing Excellence Programme.

“Our simple and effective approach to managing safety on repair and
maintenance sites was made the subject of a Constructing Excellence
case study. We also won an award for our exemplary risk management
procedures.”

Qualified personnel

Everyone working on our projects has to comply with the stringent safety standards incorporated in our Health, Safety and Welfare Policy, which we review annually to ensure that we are fulfilling our legal obligations and have accounted for any changes in personnel, responsibilities or company structure.

We provide our subcontractors and our workforce with safety training accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). All of our project managers, site managers and site-based staff take part in the CITB’s Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS).

We hold frequent ‘toolbox talks’ on site and communicate regularly with all our employees on health and safety issues.

Continuous improvement

The construction industry’s Building Safety Group audits every Beard site and the company’s health and safety policy and procedures. The group provides independent reports on our compliance with current health and safety legislation and the standard of our project-specific health and safety plans. The reports enable us to identify ways of enhancing our safety management processes.

Beard also complies with, and is a member of, the Considerate Contractor Scheme.
