Beard and the King Edward’s School in Bath have re-cycled a former temporary classroom by donating it to 1st Newbury Sea Scouts.

The building, worth around £70,000 was due for demolition as part of the development of a new £4 million Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Geography and ICT building at King Edward’s School. Andrew Sparkes, Beard’s Construction Manager, was told by his son Alex, aged 9, that his cub pack needed a new hut and following his plea, Beard and King Edward’s School were pleased to organize the re-location of the temporary classroom to its new home.

As well as benefiting more beavers, cubs and scouts in Newbury, the hut has the potential to be used by the District and County as a training centre, to
extend scouting activities to a larger number of young people in the town and county.

Crispin Rowe, Headmaster of King Edward’s School said: “The King Edward’s School is delighted that the temporary classroom will be put to good use for the benefit of young people. The school’s ethos is to help others and we are especially pleased that the development of the school has led to an opportunity for the Scouts, one of Britain’s best loved youth organisations, to improve their facilities.”

The building will be dismantled and re-erected by a specialist contractor.  Parents, volunteers and scout leaders are also helping by laying the foundations for the new building.

Andrew Sparkes said: “The scouting movement relies on volunteers who are the life-blood of the organisation. I am delighted that we are able to help my son’s Sea Scout Group and at the same time re-cycle a building for community use.”
